Concrete Projects Across Shelton
Shelton is the one Fairfield County city on our list, and for concrete contractors it is a city of two halves: an old industrial downtown along the river and a large spread of suburban homes in Huntington, White Hills and Long Hill. It counted 40,869 residents in 2020 on about 30.6 square miles of land.
How Shelton grew
Shelton was settled in 1639 as part of Stratford and split off as Huntington in 1789. A manufacturing village named for the Shelton Company started in the 1860s, and the city incorporated in 1915 before merging with Huntington in 1919. The population climbed from 12,694 in 1950 to 27,165 in 1970 and 38,101 by 2000.
After Route 8 was finished, office parks grew along it. Wikipedia notes that one developer, R.D. Scinto, built more than 2 million square feet of office space in 12 buildings. Homes followed, and many of Shelton's subdivisions date from the decades after 1950.
Downtown: walks and brick
Wikipedia notes that downtown streetscape projects added brick and cobblestone sidewalks and trees and moved some power lines underground, and that the 10-acre Riverwalk Park replaced the old Sponge Rubber plant site. Homes near downtown are older and closer together. Our work there is mostly front steps, walks and small patios. Stamped concrete in a brick or cobble pattern can tie a home's walk to the downtown look.
The suburbs: driveways and patios
In Huntington, White Hills, Long Hill and along Booth Hill Road, lots are larger. Owners ask about:
- Concrete driveways to replace aging asphalt or cracked original concrete
- Concrete patios and stamped concrete for backyard living
- Garage and shed slabs for detached garages and workshops
- Steps and walkways from the drive to the front door
With 17,174 housing units counted in 2020 and a median age of 47, many owners are updating homes they have lived in for years.
Sloped lots in the hills
White Hills and Long Hill include a fair amount of rolling ground. Driveways there may need a broom finish across the slope, a trench drain at the garage and grading that turns water off the drive before it reaches the house. Patios on slopes may be stepped, with short concrete steps between levels. We look at where water comes from on the lot, including from neighbors and the street, and design the slab to handle it rather than ignore it.
Pools and spas on larger lots
Where a Huntington or Long Hill yard has a pool, the deck around it is mostly about water and bare feet. Splash-out and rain need a path away from both the pool and the house, which usually means pitching the deck toward lawn or a deck drain. The surface needs texture that grips when wet without scraping feet, so a light broom or a stamped texture with grit in the sealer works well. Joints are laid out to meet the coping squarely. A spa pad is simpler: level, reinforced and thick enough for a filled tub.
Repairs and approvals
Concrete repair and replacement covers single cracked panels up to a full driveway. We look at the slab and its base and tell you which option makes sense.
Route 8, Bridgeport Avenue, Howe Avenue and Long Hill all carry heavy traffic. We schedule deliveries to limit time blocking the road. Anything at a city sidewalk or curb is cleared with the City of Shelton first.

Shelton Questions
Can you match a stamped walk to the brick sidewalks downtown?
We can get close with a brick or cobble stamp and a matching color. We bring samples so you can compare.
Our White Hills driveway is old asphalt. Can it be replaced with concrete?
Yes. We remove the asphalt, rebuild the base and pour a new concrete driveway with joints planned for its full length.
Do you work in Shelton even though it is in Fairfield County?
Yes. Shelton sits at the western edge of the towns we serve, and we take jobs throughout the city.
