Concrete Work in North Branford and Northford
North Branford lies east of Hamden and North Haven, and for concrete contractors it is a town shaped by stone. Much of it is dominated by Totoket Mountain, part of the trap rock Metacomet Ridge, which reaches 720 feet in the Northford section. The town counted 13,544 people in 2020 across about 25 square miles of land, and the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority owns roughly a third of its area.
The stone that builds roads
By the early 1900s, trap rock quarrying was a growth industry here, because the hard basalt makes excellent crushed stone for roads. Tilcon is still listed among the town's businesses and has used the Branford Steam Railroad to move its products to barges on the shore.
Crushed trap rock is also a common base material under driveways and slabs in this part of Connecticut. It locks together well when compacted, which is exactly what a concrete base needs. Whatever stone we use, we place it in layers and compact each one before the slab goes down.
Ten years that changed the town
North Branford split from Branford in 1831 and stayed small for a long time, with 2,017 residents in 1950. Then it exploded to 6,771 by 1960, a 235.7 percent jump, and reached 10,778 by 1970. The population peaked at 14,407 in 2010.
That means many homes here, from Northford to the neighborhoods of Totoket, Wood Chase, Sea Hill, Twin Lakes, Ashley Park and Doral Farms, date from the 1950s onward. Driveways from the earliest of those decades are now well past their prime, and later subdivisions are reaching the age where patios, walks and garage floors start to need attention.
Water authority land and Lake Gaillard
Lake Gaillard, a reservoir on Totoket Mountain formed in 1926, is managed by the regional water authority, which also keeps hiking trails in the Big Gulph area of Northford. With so much land set aside for water supply, we pay close attention to runoff on every job. We contain washout from the truck and tools, keep debris off the ground and grade slabs so water flows to lawn or a planned outlet.
Slabs that came due together
Because the town more than tripled in the 1950s, many houses got their first driveways, walks and patios within a few years of each other, and those slabs have been aging on the same clock. That makes the question rarely about one slab. A driveway from that era usually sits beside a walk and stoop of the same age. Pricing them together lets the base, grades and joints line up, and it can save a second round of truck charges and setup. If the budget means working in stages, the first pour is planned so the next one meets it cleanly.
Ledge and slopes
On properties close to the ridge, bedrock can sit near the surface. Ledge is a solid foundation, but it changes how deep we can dig and how we set grades. We look for it at the estimate and plan around it. On slopes, we may step a patio or add landings to a walk so it stays safe in icy weather.

North Branford Questions
We hit rock digging near our Northford house. Can you still pour a patio?
Yes. Ledge makes a firm base. We adjust excavation and grades around it and explain any change to the plan before pouring.
Does living near water authority land change how you work?
It means extra care with runoff. We contain truck washout and debris and grade the slab so water drains to lawn or a planned outlet.
Can you widen our 1960s North Branford driveway?
Yes. We usually remove the old slab and pour a new, wider one so the joints and surface match across the full width.
Should we replace the driveway and front walk at the same time?
If both are the same age and both are failing, doing them together usually makes sense. The grades and joints can be planned as one layout, and you avoid paying for a second setup. If budget means doing one now, we plan it so the other can meet it cleanly later.
